1) Preparation:

  • Zip Up: Ensure zippers are zipped all the way up to avoid damage.
  • Turn Inside Out: Turn the item inside out to minimize pilling and protect the fabric.

2) Washing:

  • Sort by Color: Always wash with similar colours to prevent colour bleeding.
  • Sort by Fabric: Wash with similar fabrics, especially delicate materials like bamboo.
  • Machine Settings: Use the delicate cycle on your washing machine.
  • Water Temperature: Always use cold water to preserve fabrics and energy.
  • Chemicals: When washing baby clothes, avoid harsh chemicals, additives, and bleach. (Harsh detergents and bleach can weaken bamboo fibers, making them more prone to pilling so let’s avoid them to ensure longevity of your items.)

3) Drying:

  • Avoid the Dryer: It is recommended to avoid using a dryer. If necessary, use the lowest heat setting.
  • Alternative Drying: Preferably, hang or lay flat to dry the garments to maintain their shape and integrity.

4) Ironing (if necessary):

  • Temperature: Iron on a very low heat to avoid damaging the fabric.

By following these methods, you will reduce friction and stress on the natural bamboo fibers meaning that you can ensure the longevity and sustainability of your garments while also preserving their quality and appearance.

Understanding Pilling:

Pilling forms when fibers in fabric become loose and entangle due to friction, creating small, fuzzy balls on the surface. This common issue does not weaken the fabric but can make it look worn. Pilling is especially prevalent in baby and children’s clothing due to the frequent wear and tear from active use. Natural fibers like bamboo, while soft and smooth, are particularly prone to pilling due to their weaker individual fibers. Proper care in washing, drying, and handling can significantly mitigate pilling in bamboo garments.

If pilling does appear, use one of these methods to help remove the nubs:

  1. Fabric Shaver: This is an effective tool for removing pills. A battery-operated fabric shaver can safely trim away the pills, refreshing the fabric's appearance.
  2. Manual Removal: Stretch the garment over a curved surface and carefully remove the pills with small scissors or a safety razor. This method requires precision to avoid damaging the fabric, so assess the risk before starting.
  3. Adhesive Removal: For less severe pilling, a lint roller or sticky tape can effectively capture and remove pills. Simply press and roll over the pilled areas to clean the surface.
